Home > Work-Based Immigration > Through Self-SponsorshipThrough Self-SponsorshipThere are three categories of foreign nationals who can be said to sponsor themselves for permanent immigration to the United States, either individually or through a business that they own. These are: 1. Aliens of Extraordinary Ability; 2. Aliens of Exceptional Ability (rarely used); and 3. Immigrant Investors, referred to in the Immigration Code as "Employment Creation Immigrants." Advantages. These visa categories do not require a separate sponsoring US employer or a Labor Certification. Also, ample immigrant visas are available. This means shorter processing times and a shorter wait until final green-card issuance. Disadvantages. It is much more difficult to qualify for these visas than for those requiring employer sponsorship. They are also lawyer- and paperwork-intensive. For this reason they may be more costly than employer-sponsored immigrant visas. ***** Please note: The information at this page is general in nature.
